Bank verification
CBE Receipt Check
Free, no signup. Checked against CBE's own receipt record.
Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) is the largest bank in Ethiopia and the most common settlement rail for Ethiopian businesses. New CBE receipts carry a Receipt ID, shared from the CBE app as a mbreciept.cbe.com.et link or QR code, which cheki checks against CBE's own record without an account number. Older receipts that only show an FT reference still work with the last 8 digits of the receiving account.
Required information
- Receipt ID or receipt link (required), e.g.
https://mbreciept.cbe.com.et/fHCxyV4mg5pRIwEkJO
Older receipt?
- FT reference + last 8 digits of the receiving account (legacy). Needs FT reference and receiving account (last 8 digits). Older receipts and SMS that only show an FT reference. Also reached from dashed mbreciept links (mbreciept.cbe.com.et/FT...-12345678), which carry the FT reference and the 8-digit suffix (link shape inferred from links.et).
Reference number format
Receipt ID from the mbreciept.cbe.com.et link or QR code (e.g. fHCxyV4mg5pRIwEkJO, or v2-... on newer receipts). Older receipts: FT followed by 10 letters and digits (e.g. FT26140P01YB) plus the last 8 digits of the receiving account.
Example: https://mbreciept.cbe.com.et/fHCxyV4mg5pRIwEkJO
How to verify CBE with cheki
- Ask for the receipt link or QR code from the CBE app (mbreciept.cbe.com.et/...), or copy its Receipt ID
- Paste the link or Receipt ID into cheki. No account number is needed
- cheki reads the receipt from CBE's own record and shows the sender, receiver, amount and date
- Older receipt with only an FT reference? Add the last 8 digits of the receiving account
How CBE receipt verification works
The CBE receipt endpoint is: https://mbreciept.cbe.com.et/{RECEIPT_ID} (current format)
Placeholders, error shapes and gotchas are in the CBE endpoint reference.
This is a public URL that returns a JSON response containing the official transaction data. No authentication is required.
Who uses CBE verification
- Retail counters confirming in-person CBE transfers
- Delivery teams validating payment before handover
- Finance teams reconciling daily CBE inflows
- Developers automating CBE checks through the REST API
Verifying CBE via API
cheki provides a free REST API for CBE verification:
POST https://cheki.et/api/verify
Request body: { "bank": "cbe", "reference": "https://mbreciept.cbe.com.et/fHCxyV4mg5pRIwEkJO" }
Older receipt (legacy format): { "bank": "cbe", "reference": "FT26140P01YB", "accountNumber": "1000XXXXXXX" }
See the API documentation for full details.
What you need to verify a CBE receipt
For a new CBE receipt, one thing:
- The receipt link (mbreciept.cbe.com.et/...) or its Receipt ID, from the CBE app's share button or the receipt QR code
- Older receipt with only an FT reference (e.g. FT26140P01YB)? Add the last 8 digits of the receiving account. This uses CBE's older receipt service, which is often unreachable
Older CBE receipts (FT reference)
Before the share links, CBE receipts were PDFs at apps.cbe.com.et:100, looked up by the FT reference plus the last 8 digits of the receiving account. cheki still accepts that older format, but most receipts now carry a Receipt ID, and the older host is often unreachable, so ask for the receipt link when you can.
How to spot a fake CBE receipt
Fake CBE receipts are a growing problem in Ethiopia. A fake receipt may have a real-looking FT reference number but will not appear in CBE's system. Always verify through cheki or the official CBE app. If cheki returns 'Receipt not found', the receipt is likely fake.
- Check that the sender name matches who claimed to send the payment
- Verify the amount matches what was agreed
- Confirm the date is recent (not an old receipt being reused)
- Check the reference number format (FT + date + sequence + code)
Checking CBE payment status
Commercial Bank of Ethiopia publishes transaction data at https://mbreciept.cbe.com.et/{RECEIPT_ID}. When someone sends you a payment via CBE, a receipt is generated at this URL. cheki fetches the receipt, parses it, and tells you whether the payment is real, who sent it, and for how much. This takes 2 to 10 seconds.
What information you need
To check a CBE payment, ask the sender for the receipt ID or receipt link from their receipt. That's all you need, no account number required.
- Receipt ID or receipt link (e.g. https://mbreciept.cbe.com.et/fHCxyV4mg5pRIwEkJO)
- Older receipt: FT reference + last 8 digits of the receiving account (legacy format, still accepted)
Common CBE payment verification scenarios
CBE payment verification is used by merchants, delivery services, and businesses across Ethiopia. Common scenarios include confirming a customer has actually paid before releasing goods, verifying a delivery payment before handing over a package, and reconciling end-of-day bank transfers.
