Bank verification
Awash Receipt Check
Free, no signup. Checked against Awash's own receipt record.
Awash Bank publishes transaction receipts as public HTML pages on awashpay.awashbank.com. The share link has a two-part token: the first part is the numeric Transaction ID encoded in base-36, and the second part is a server-side counter that increases with transaction time. The link is sent automatically via SMS after every transaction. You can also share it from the Awash app.
Required information

Placeholders, error shapes and gotchas are in the Awash endpoint reference.

Verifying Awash via API
cheki provides a free REST API for Awash verification:
POST https://cheki.et/api/verify
Request body: { "bank": "awash", "reference": "https://awashpay.awashbank.com:8225/-2KDL95Z0NR-4U61O6" }
See the API documentation for full details.
What you need to verify a Awash receipt
To verify a Awash receipt, you need only the transaction reference number.
- Transaction reference number (e.g. 2KDL95Z0NR-4U61O6), found on the receipt or in the Awash app
- No account number required, Awash returns the full receipt with just the reference
How to spot a fake Awash receipt
Fake Awash receipts are a growing problem in Ethiopia. A fake receipt may have a real-looking reference number but will not appear in Awash's system. Always verify through cheki or the official Awash app. If cheki returns 'Receipt not found', the receipt is likely fake.
- Check that the sender name matches who claimed to send the payment
- Verify the amount matches what was agreed
- Confirm the date is recent (not an old receipt being reused)
- Check the reference number format (Awash share link from SMS (e.g. https://awashpay.awashbank.com:8225/-2KDL95Z0NR-4U61O6). The first segment is base-36 of the Transaction ID; the second segment is a server counter.)
Checking Awash payment status
Awash Bank publishes transaction data at https://awashpay.awashbank.com:8225/-{BASE36_TRANSACTION_ID}-{COUNTER_TOKEN}. When someone sends you a payment via Awash, a receipt is generated at this URL. cheki fetches the receipt, parses it, and tells you whether the payment is real, who sent it, and for how much. This takes 2 to 10 seconds.
What information you need
To check a Awash payment, ask the sender for the share link from their receipt. That's all you need, no account number required.
- Share link (e.g. 2KDL95Z0NR-4U61O6)
