Bank verification
BOA Receipt Check
Free, no signup. Checked against BOA's own receipt record.
Bank of Abyssinia (BOA) is one of Ethiopia's largest private banks. BOA publishes receipt data as JSON via a public API endpoint that requires the transaction reference and the last 5 digits of the receiving account number. For inter-bank transfers (BOA to CBE, Dashen, etc.), the receipt QR code is AES-256-CBC encrypted: cheki decrypts it to read the reference and receiving account, then confirms the receipt with BOA. If BOA cannot be reached, the result is marked as decoded from the QR and not confirmed. No Selenium or headless browser required.
Required information
- Reference (required), e.g.
FT252003JZPP - Receiving account (last 5 digits) (required), last 5 digits minimum
Reference number format
Alphanumeric reference starting with 2 letters (varies by transaction type). Inter-bank transfers use FT references (e.g., FT252003JZPP).
Example: AB12345678
How to verify BOA with cheki
- For BOA-to-BOA transfers: get the transaction reference and last 5 digits of your receiving account
- cheki calls BOA's public JSON API and returns structured payment data in 1-2 seconds
- For inter-bank transfers (BOA to CBE/Dashen/etc.): scan the QR code on the receipt with cheki's camera scanner or upload a screenshot
- cheki auto-detects BOA QR payloads and decrypts them server-side: the QR supplies the reference and receiving account, and BOA confirms the receipt. No account number to type. If BOA cannot be reached, the result is shown as decoded only, not verified.
How BOA receipt verification works
The BOA receipt endpoint is: https://cs.bankofabyssinia.com/api/onlineSlip/getDetails/?id={REFERENCE}{LAST_5_DIGITS}
Placeholders, error shapes and gotchas are in the BOA endpoint reference.
This is a public URL that returns a JSON response containing the official transaction data. No authentication is required.
Who uses BOA verification
- Merchants verifying BOA transfers at checkout
- Businesses reconciling BOA deposits
- Verifying inter-bank transfers (BOA to CBE, Dashen, etc.) via QR code decryption
- Apps integrating BOA payment verification with QR code support
- Finance teams auditing BOA transactions
Verifying BOA via API
cheki provides a free REST API for BOA verification:
POST https://cheki.et/api/verify
Request body: { "bank": "boa", "reference": "FT252003JZPP", "accountNumber": "1000XXXXXXX" }
See the API documentation for full details.
QR code verification for inter-bank transfers
BOA's JSON API does not recognize inter-bank transfer references. However, the QR code on the receipt is an AES-256-CBC encrypted payload that carries the reference and the full receiving account. cheki decrypts it server-side using the key exposed in BOA's receipt web app and confirms the receipt with BOA. If BOA cannot be reached, the result is marked as decoded only, not verified. See our BOA QR code breakdown for the full technical details.
What you need to verify a BOA receipt
To verify a Bank of Abyssinia receipt, you need one of:
- Transaction reference number + last 5 digits of the receiving account (for same-bank transfers)
- QR code payload from the receipt (for inter-bank transfers)
Checking BOA payment status
Bank of Abyssinia publishes transaction data at https://cs.bankofabyssinia.com/api/onlineSlip/getDetails/?id={REFERENCE}{LAST_5_DIGITS}. When someone sends you a payment via BOA, a receipt is generated at this URL. cheki fetches the receipt, parses it, and tells you whether the payment is real, who sent it, and for how much. This takes 2 to 10 seconds.
What information you need
To check a BOA payment, ask the sender for the reference from their receipt and make sure you know the last 5 digits of your receiving account. Both pieces of information are required by the endpoint.
- Reference (e.g. AB12345678)
- Last 5 digits of your account number
Common BOA payment verification scenarios
BOA payment verification is used by merchants, delivery services, and businesses across Ethiopia. Common scenarios include confirming a customer has actually paid before releasing goods, verifying a delivery payment before handing over a package, and reconciling end-of-day bank transfers.
